It’s always been a huge challenge for a band to release albums in back to back years. After moving to Fearless Records and dropping one of the best pop punk albums of last year, Gatsby’s American Dream have failed to live up to their dream. Volcano was a very technical album with excellent vocal production, immense variety, and pounding rock anthems. Unfortunately, this self-titled album never erupts to such magnitude. They continue to sing about problems in the music industry; however, the themes are beginning to feel redundant. If you’ve never heard this band before, then you will be happy with the release, but for a long time fan, this album won’t blow you away. My biggest complaint is not the vocal production (which does lack), but rather the lack of some slower songs. I always enjoyed a gentle breakdown on a Gatsby album because they give the rest of the album more of a relative “boom.” In a more positive light, the album’s aggression will make fine dining at the live show.
